CORFU. The Central Corfu Municipal Press Office accidentally published last Friday old data for the pandemic.
The new data:
Analysis of the data collected by Central Corfu Municipal Covid Watch Committee shows that the spike in cases continues in Corfu. The number of new confirmed Covid cases remains at the very high levels reached in the middle of the month. At the same time, the number of hospitalisations remains at very high levels for the pandemic in Corfu. The widespread transmission has inevitably resulted in serious cases and deaths.
November has been the month with the biggest outbreak since the beginning of the pandemic to date. The number of confirmed Covid cases in November was four times higher than in October, while the number of hospitalisations was three times higher and the number of deaths four times higher. The outbreak of the pandemic was initially mainly concentrated in Corfu Town and the surrounding areas, but is now spread around the island.
The spread of the virus amongst the island's population is continuing and at a much higher rate than at the beginning of the autumn. This spread is partly reflected in the tracing of viral load in urban sewage. The assessment of this viral load should be done in combination with the other indicators, in order to have a clear picture of the development of the pandemic in Corfu.
The strict adherence to the preventative measures and the participation in the vaccination programme is necessary in order to limit the spread. The regular adherence to these measures in all social, educational and economic activities can drastically reduce the further spread of the virus. At the same time, increasing the vaccination rate with new vaccinations and administering the third shot six months after the first shot is the only way to protect ourselves from Covid-19.
Participation in the vaccination programme has increased sharply lately, with both people who were vaccinated in the spring and are now receiving the booster shot and people who are now deciding to receive the first shot. This development is particularly important, as an increase in the number of people getting vaccinated can lead to the control of this wave of the pandemic as well.
In the coming weeks, the new wave of the pandemic may initially stabilise at the high levels recorded in November and then start to decrease. However, Corfu Hospital will continue to be under pressure until there is a significant reduction in cases. Inevitably, serious cases and deaths will continue to be recorded in the coming period.
The spread of the virus is at particularly high levels, and therefore everyone must be careful and adhere to the measures, in order to limit possible points of transmission of the virus, especially with the December festivities approaching. Again, it should be noted that it is very important that the booster shot is administered, especially to those belonging to vulnerable groups. Controlling this wave of the pandemic is of vital importance in view of the coming winter and the new Omicron variant. An analytical report of the Covid-19 epidemiological situation in Corfu has been posted on the Municipality website.
