CORFU. There has been a sharp increase in the number of patients hospitalised in the Covid Unit.

On Monday afternoon, 8 November, there were 24 Covid patients hospitalised in the Special Infectious Diseases Unit, whereas there were 14 on Friday afternoon.

In addition to the Covid Unit, another bed in the Pulmonary Clinic is also being used.

According to hospital sources, a 95-year-old woman was admitted to the Covid Unit today, but she died two hours later.

There are no patients in the ICU at present following the death on Sunday of the 65-year-old vaccinated man who had been hospitalised there.

According to the latest update from Corfu Covid Watch, the high transmissibility of the Delta variant, the relaxation of protective measures and the fact that about a quarter of the adult population in Corfu remains unvaccinated have led to a spike in the epidemic.

At the same time, the immunity of those who have been vaccinated is beginning to wane gradually as for most of them several months have passed since the second shot - making the third shot a necessity.

The new, strong wave of the pandemic, which is also being experienced in Corfu, can be limited by strict adherence to the preventaitve measures by a significant proportion of the population and an increase in the rate of vaccination, which has slackened.
