CORFU. Head Engineer at the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and Head at the Design and Construction Unit (MOMKA) Major General Michail Klouvas will be in Corfu on Monday.

Deputy Regional Governor for Cofu Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi that a team of the Armed Forces will be in Corfu on Sunday, while the Head Engineer at the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and Head at the Design and Construction Unit (MOMKA) Major General Michail Klouvas will arrive in Corfu on Monday.

The team will be composed of 10-15 people of the Army’s Technical Services, professional engineers and heavy equipment operators of the Design and Construction Unit (MOMKA).

The Forces will begin work on Monday, by listing initially the interventions that will be needed. “They will work without delay, in a targeted manner and quickly,” Deputy Regional Governor for Civil Protection Nikos Miliotis told Enimerosi. He had worked effectively with the same team before in Cephalonia, following the damage caused by “Ianos” a year ago.

The Ionian Islands Region, and specifically the Deputy Regional Governor for Civil Protection Nikos Miliotis, Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure & Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis and Deputy Regional Governor for Cofu Kostas Zorbas, as well as the Heads of the respective services, are all responsible for the management of emergency operations and any consultation with the Armed Forces.

Three priorities

The work to be done will exclusively concern the three major streams of the island – Kavalarena, Potamos and Messonghi – which require heavy machinery available to the army.

The army has sent a letter to the three Mayors of the island, requesting that they report whether there is a need for interventions in the municipal and rural network, while they also asked for the exact location on a map and the specific work needed. Due to the urgency of the situation, the Mayors were asked to reply by today afternoon, whether there are any needs, so that they can inform the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and the Design and Construction Unit (MOMKA).

According to Mr. Miliotis, immediately after the officers’ arrival, a brief meeting will be held and the team will go to the areas, where interventions will be needed.
