CORFU. The university chose the small island to set up the first Arts Station to research and create works of art.

The Ionian University Faculty of Music & Audiovisual Arts has chosen the island of Othoni, the westernmost point of Greece, to set up the first Arts Station in Kalogeros.

The new facility will have a cultural and educational programme with educators, postgraduate students, graduates and artists to develop artistic work and research using technology appropriate to each project.

The initiative is yet another effort by the university to cooperate with the local community and making the coastal island with its small population a hub for academic projects.

Memorandum of Cooperation

The decision to set up the Arts Station was taken at a meeting of the Senate on 25 August and a few days later a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed on the island by the Dean Andreas Floros, Yiannis Deliyiannis from the Faculty of Music & Audiovisual Arts, who will be the project coordinator, and the owner of the Kalogeros property Dionysis Dimoulitsas.

"Arts Stations are an integral part of departments involved in the arts, such as the School of Fine Arts in Athens," said Mr. Deliyiannis. "They are places where artists can go to create away from the university. They are basically an extension of the university in places that are not easily accessible. This is the first one to be set up by the Ionian University." With regard to ferry connections to the small island, he said that in the summer there are at least five a week and around four a week in the winter.

He told Enimerosi that the basic infrastructure for the Arts Station is in place with the renovated mansion, built in 1844, in Kalogeros.

What is planned

As part of the Memorandum of Cooperation, all participants are obliged to give at least one work of art created there free to Kalogeros and the right for it to be used in exhibitions at home or abroad as well as in any printed or digital material with the name of the artist.

Intellectual copyright of the works donated belongs jointly to the artist and the Kalogeros Arts Station and these works become the property of Kalogeros.

"These works can be a picture, video, audio or a video game," said Mr. Deliyiannis.

He said that participants will be given free accommodation and all their basic expenses will be covered - electricty, water, Wifi etc. They will be able to stay for up to two months in the year, which can be split up if they so wish.

The first applications have already been received and once all the necessary procedures have been completed the Arts Station will start operating.
