CORFU. Corfu Hospital Administration praises the act of the hospital employee, who was found to be a compatible bone marrow donor and offered life to a fellow human.
Statement from Hospital Administration:
The donation of bone marrow is the greatest act of giving and solidarity. By offering a little of our time, we can give life to thousands of people in need.
A voluntary donor can help a fellow human whose only hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant by donating a little saliva, a few cells and a little of their time.
When a patient cannot find a compatible donor in their family environment (the odds of compatibility between siblings are about 30%), their life depends on finding a compatible voluntary donor. Since the chances of tissue similarity between unrelated donors are extremely low (1:20,000 - 1: 1,000,000), we need many of them in order to increase the chances of each patient finding a life-giving donor in time. Worldwide, more than 50,000 patients every year, adults and children alike, are looking for a compatible voluntary donor.
Today, about half of the patients who can receive a transplant are unable to benefit because they cannot find a compatible donor. Out of the 150 patients who seek a donor each year, about 50 are children. So let's put our love into practice, because as Shirley Nolan, who is known for her struggle, said “We have a long, hard road ahead, but I look forward to the day when no child dies like my son, waiting for a donor to save him.”
We, as the Administration of the Corfu General Hospital “Agia Irene”, are very proud of our employee, who was found to be a compatible bone marrow donor. Through an act of love she gave life to a fellow human. The bone marrow harvest took place at the “Attikon” General University Hospital, through the “ELPIDA” Association.
Angeliki’s humanity and sensitivity deserve our applause and we encourage other people to do the same.
