CORFU. The Central Corfu Municipal Council decided by a majority vote on Monday for the summer camp on Vidos Island not to go ahead this year either.

For the fourth year running there will be no summer camp on Vidos Island and arguments continue as to who is responsible, with the buck being passed from one service to the other.

The Central Corfu Municipal Council decided by a majority vote on Monday for the summer camp on Vidos Island not to go ahead this year either. The head of the Kerkyra Psilla party and Councillor responsible for Vidos and Lazareto islands Spyros Neratzis put forward the proposal for the summer camp not to go ahead this year due to repair work that still needs to be done and the facilities are not ready to accommodate the children.

According to Spyros Neratzis, despite the numerous requests to the Municipal Technical Works department regarding the necessary repair work, he only got a response in April saying it was not their responsibility and that he should contact the Business Works Service in the same department!

Since the time of the previous local authority the Technical Works Department has been divided into three separate departments each responsible for specific services.

"Of the 28 works that need to be done, the Business Works Service cannot carry out 24 of them, which are necessary for the Vidos summer camp to be operationsl," said Mr. Neratzis. "When the serious repair work can go ahead is a matter for the local authority and the Technical Works department."

He said that the repair work that is absolutely necessary is in the toilets, kitchen and storerooms.

Delay in carrying out work due to Covid

The head of Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros said that the local authority wanted to carry out the work on the Vidos summer camp but that due to Covid-19 and the fact that they were understaffed the necessary work could not be done over the recent period of time in order to allow the camp to open this year.

"There will be creative activities this year," Mr. Kalogeros told Enimerosi. "The building where these are held and the storage space have been repaired. Unfortunately, the summer camp has remained closed for four years. Mr. Neratzis delayed in contacting the Business Works Service and he should have been more proactive when he didn't receive an immediate response. It is our desire to immediately resolve the issue with the camp."

Vidos restaurant

With regard to the restaurant on Vidos, the operation of which has been given to a well-known chain, it was decided to request that a section of the seating in the restaurant be set aside for non-customers who will not be obliged to order as well as the outdoor area of 1,400 sq.m. in front of the restaurant.
