CORFU. Some parents kept their children at home as they refused to allow them to take the self test.

Following weeks of tele-education, Corfu nursery, primary and junior high pupils returned to school today without any real problems. High school pupils have already been back at school since before the Easter holidays.

Latest update

Regional Director of Education Petros Aggelopoulos told Enimerosi that the reopening went smoothly. According to updated information from the Department of Education this afternoon, a total of 8 pupils - 5 at primary schools and 3 at secondary schools - were absent due to positive Covid self tests. The tests were taken prior to today so the parents kept their children at home.

The pupils are following the procedure laid down by EODY - taking a repeat PCR or rapid test at a public health facility and remaining in isolation at home until the results are announced.

Refusal to take test

According to Mr. Aggelopoulos, in the Ionian Islands approximately 0 - 0.45% of parents refused to allow their children to take the self test - there were 5 such cases in Corfu. These parents of primary school children submitted written documents to the educational institutes claiming it was there constitutional right not to submit their children to these tests. The schools did not allow these pupils to attend classes without, however, any problems arising.

On a national level there were approximately 3,000 positive test results out of a total of 1.7m in primary and secondary education.

Platform crashes

Due to the overload on the self-testing.gov.gr platform, where the self test results are registered, on Sunday night, a lot of parents sent their children to school on Monday morning with written forms.

The two free self tests are available to pupils and teachers until Wednesday and will be available free to those working in the public and private sectors from Thursday 13 May until Wednesday 19 May.
