CORFU. The Old Town Hall was lit up on 4 February for World Cancer Day.
The symbolic gesture for World Cancer Day was organised by Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality in collaboration with the Corfu branch of the Hellenic Cancer Society. This is done annually on 4 February following a decision by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
The Municipality responded to the request from the President of the Corfu branch of the Hellenic Cancer Society Maria Gonidi in an effort to raise public awareness and encourage prevention and early diagnosis in the fight against cancer.
Mayor Meropi Ydraiou said that lighting up the Old Town Hall is the least that could be done to show support and solidarity in recognition of the tremendous work done by the Hellenic Cancer Society and its branch in Corfu.
The Municipality was represented by the Deputy Mayor for Culture Chrysoula Tombrou, who coordinated the event, and the Hellenic Cancer Society by the local President Maria Gonidi and board member Athanasia Hondroyianni.
