CORFU. The contractor began work digging up the asphalt on Thursday morning.

The area between the New Fortress and the outdoor market which was used as a car park up to now is going to be made over.

The contractor responsible for digging up the asphalt, which was in a dreadful state anyway, began work on Thursday morning.

The area was known as the outdoor market car park even though for many years this was not its official purpose and belongs to the Inspectorate of Antiquities.

It has been used by cars as a necessary solution to the long-standing problem of the lack of parking spaces in Corfu Town. Now, with funding in the region of €1m from the Public Investment Programme, which had been approved by the previous Culture Ministry, there will be a complete makeover which is expected to be completed in five years.

An outdoor theatre will be constructed there once the study and plans have been completed. Until then the area will be cleaned up and will not be accessible for vehicles.

The same project includes other work as well, some of which have already begun, such as cleaning the walls of the Old and New Fortresses.
