CORFU. ΄Mantzaros΄ Philharmonic Society performed its traditional concert at the Old Palace Colonnade last night, Tuesday 11 August, conducted by Socrates Anthis.

There was a strict limit on the number of people who could attend and standing was not allowed as part of the measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

This traditional concert is perfomed every year on 11 August in memory of St. Spyridon's miracle in saving the island from the Ottoman siege in1716 on this date.

'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society once again delighted the audience and filled the town with the sounds of its wonderful music. Despite the strict health protocols, those who attended were enchanted by the performance.

All those present were especially moved by E. O. Neske's 'Changing of the Guard', which the 'Mantzaros' band has performed on the same day every year for over 70 years, as well as the conducting of his own composition 'Archipelagos' by 94-year-old Honorary Conductor Nikos Farougias.

Statement from President Ioannis Trivizas:

"Following this wonderful evening, the Board of 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society would like to thank the following: first of all, all the musicians in the band for their efforts at this difficult time under the guidance of their conductor to produce this wonderful result; our conductor Socrates Anthis, his deputy Spyros Rouvas and our Honorary Conductor Nikos Farougias; soloists Dimitris Gogas, Spyros Arkoudis, Spyros Tzekos, Dionysis Martinis and Tasos Aspiotis.

We would also like to thank Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality, the Museum of Asian Art and the local TV stations CorfuTV and Startmedia for their support.

Our thanks go to Corfu Scouts for allowing us to use the Scouting Hall for rehearsals. And finally and above all, the Corfu public which today and over the years has supported and honoured 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society."
