CORFU. As of today Corfu General Hospital has Cepheid΄s GeneXpert diagnostic machine with automated PCR.

The American company's coronavirus detection equipment was donated by Corfu Medical Association along with several reagents. Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas described it as cutting-technology.

The MP stressed that the acquisition of the equipment also has symbolic value. "From today Corfu belongs to one of the few tourist islands in the country with this kind of equipment. This fact sends a message to our visitors that Corfu has adequate health facilities and is a safe destination."

Mr. Gikas thanked the President of the Medical Association Dimitris Kaloudis, who managed the bank account that was used for donations, as well as all the members of the public and organisations that donated money so that the hospital could obtain this important equipment.

He also said that, according to the programme being prepared by EODY (National Public Health Organisation), in the coming weeks Corfu Hospital will be given a second similar machine.

In addition to MP Stefanos Gikas, the following were also present at today's presentation: Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Melita Andrioti, Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, Corfu Medical Association President Dimitris Kaloudis along with board members and Corfu General Hospital Director Leonidas Roubatis.
