CORFU. Critical statement from the Corfu General Hospital Director towards some of the Corfu media, whom he accuses of spreading misinformation and unverified reports.

The Corfu Hospital Director issued a statement on Thursday (2/4) afternoon in which he talks about unverified reports in some of the - mainly online - local media, which, during the global health crisis "could generate fear amongst the island's residents and undermine people's trust in the National Health Service".

The Hospital DIrector Leonidas Roubatis calls on everyone to "be equal to the occasion," because "at the end of the day, they will be held to account".

Statement from the Director of Corfu General Hospital:

"Corfu General Hospital would like to state the following:

For the last month the country has found itself in a globally unprecedented health crisis.

All the country's health services are in ongoing 'state of war' to protect members of the public and public health.

This obviously includes Corfu Hospital.

All the medical, paramedical, nursing, administrative and technical personnel are on the front line and deserve everybody's admiration and gratitude.

However, it is both sad and disappointing to see that a section of the local media - mainly online - is acting in a way which could generate fear amongst the island's residents and undermine people's trust in the National Health Service.

On an almost daily basis we see unverified reports which bear no relation to reality.

Reports referring to 'hidden' COVID-19 cases, lack of health equipment, the exposure of all the hospital personnel to danger, supposed quarantine of hospital personnel and, in general, violations of strict EODY guidelines in dealing with cases in the midst of this pandemic are categorically denied and are spreading misinformation and unverified news.

During this
globally unprecedented health crisis the publication of inaccuracies and unsubstantiated information which has not been officially verified can harm the smooth functioning of our hospital, weaken the public's trust in the National Health Service and undermine the local economy - and by extension, the national economy.

Our health institute must - especially during this globally unprecedented health crisis - be allowed to dedicate itself completely to carrying out its duty to protect the health of the island's residents, public health and, in general, the country's National Health System.

In conclusion, we need to stress that the Hospital Administration is here to fulfil its duty to the full in order to
protect the health of the island's residents, public health and, in general, the country's National Health System.

It also hopes at this critical time that everybody can be equal to the occasion - at the end of the day they will be held to account."
