ATHENS. Announcement from Minister of Maritime and Island Policy Yiannis Plakiotakis to prevent spread of coronavirus and following today΄s mass exodus from urban centres.
The Minister announced that from tomorrow, 21/3, only permanent residents will be allowed to travel to islands. Mr. Plakiotakis told ERT TV that tax returns or statements (ekatharistiko) will be required as proof and will have to be shown before boarding the ferry.
The decision is expected to be published soon outlining the details of implementation, restrictions and exceptions (armed forces, health services, workers etc.).
The Minister for Maritme and Island policy Yiannis Plakiotakis said, "As you know the Government is taking all the measures that will help limit the COVID-19 pandemic. The basic message is 'Stay at Home' and we are restricting movement to what is absolutely necessary in order to protect ourselves and our fellow citizens.
Following our collaboration with the Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias, from 06:00 on 21 March travel to the islands by ferry will ONLY be allowed for the islands' permanent residents. Travel will only be allowed for the essential needs of permanent residents, transportation of provisions and for those who want to leave the islands.
In this way we will be protecting our islanders. As the Prime Minister pointed out in his message, the smaller the island where someone thinks they can go to protect themselves, the more difficult - if not impossible - will be their treatment if they fall ill there. We have collective responsibility. We are preventing the spread of the pandemic. 'Stay at Home'," Mr. Plakiotakis concluded.
