ATHENS. The Minister for Maritime and Island Policy Yiannis Plakiotakis and Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias announced new measures for ferry services.

The measures came following the strong recommendations of PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis to limit movement.

According to the new measures, travel by ferry will only be allowed for permanent residents and transportation of provisions for the islands. Those who wish to return home from the islands will be allowed to.

The decision will be published outlining the details of implementation, restrictions and exceptions.

The Minister for Maritme and Island policy Yiannis Plakiotakis said, "As you know the Government is taking all the measures that will help limit the COVID-19 pandemic. The basic message is 'Stay at Home' and we are restricting movement to what is absolutely necessary in order to protect ourselves and our fellow citizens.

Following our collaboration with the Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias, from 06:00 on 21 March travel to the islands by ferry will ONLY be allowed for the islands' permanent residents. Travel will only be allowed for the essential needs of permanent residents, transportation of provisions and for those who want to leave the islands.

In this way we will be protecting our islanders. As the Prime Minister pointed out in his message, the smaller the island where someone thinks they can go to protect themselves, the more difficult - if not impossible - will be their treatment if they fall ill there. We have collective responsibility. We are preventing the spread of the pandemic. 'Stay at Home'," Mr. Plakiotakis concluded.
