There is a new helpline in operation from today at 08:00 for support and information about coronavirus from specialists. As well as providing advice from doctors and support from psychologists the helpline will also assist with food and medicine for members of vulnerable groups in need in the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality. The initiative comes following a proposal from the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor at a meeting on Sunday.

From 08:00 this morning members of the public will be able to call 26610 25555 to get information and advice about coronavirus from volunteer doctors from Corfu Medical Association. A list of volunteers and a schedule of operation has been drawn up. The public can also call 26610 25555 to ask about children and languages available are English, French, Spanish and Italian.

The helpline will be available Monday - Friday, 08:00 - 20:00 and Saturday & Sunday, 09:00 - 13:00.

Psychological support will also be available from psychologists working with 'Nikos Moros' DIMOP and special mention must also be made of Municipal Social Welfare staff and Red Cross volunteers who are involved with the Helpline.

Food and medicine for vulnerable groups

In order to provide support for members of the public who belong to vulnerable groups and who are unable to protect themselves from the spread of coronavirus, Central Corfu Municipality and the Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare will help by providing essential food and medicine to those in the Municipality. This will apply to those over 70, those with special needs and those with chronic problems (such as heart, respiratory problems, diabetes etc.).

These people can also call 26610 25555, their needs will be assessed and help will be provided in collaboration with supermarkets, grocers, chemists and other shops.

Meropi Ydraiou: We are working day and night to provide support for the public

Mayor Meropi Ydraiou gave warm thanks and congratulated the Medical Association and the doctors and psychologists who are responding to the situation in a direct and practical way as well as everyone who is helping in this effort. She said, "We have been able to man the phoneline with doctors who have volunteered their services in order to provide authorative advice to the public. I must point out, however, that this helpline initiative in no way replaces the 4-digit national helpline (1135) but aims to relieve the pressure on the national line as the need for information is continuously increasing.

Members of the public in the Central & Diapontia Islands Municipality calling 26610 25555 can also have other forms of support (psychological, food and medicine). I believe this is a significant service for the public at this time of unprecedented difficulty. It is at this time that the Municipality has to be there for the public and I can assure everyone that we are working day and night to do this. Together we can do it."
