ATHENS. Immediate Government measures are expected following scenes of supermarket crowding.
The Deputy Minister of Development Nikos Papathanasis told OPEN TV that from Monday only a specific number of people will be allowed to enter supermarkets due to coronavirus.
The aim is to avoid recent scenes at supermarkets with dozens of people - young, old and even young children - even more so following the reduction of personnel after Friday.
According to Mr. Papathanasis, the number of customers allowed into each shop will depend on the size, with controls at the entrances so that they don't all go in at the same time. "We are in continuous contact with all the large supermarkets in the country," he said and stressed that "the situation will ease from the coming week."
Mr. Papathanasis said, "There are enough supplies for three months and people don't need to rush to the supermarket and goods may go off as they won't be required." Together with the Minister of Development Adonis Giorgiades they are started to visit supermarkets every morning and TV crews will be allowed on these visits to observe the amount of goods available.
He went on to say that supermarkets will also be doing deliveries, even on Sundays. The Ministry is also looking extending opening hours if required.
