CORFU. Corfu MP Stefanos Gikas said, "The extension and operation of the waterways network has been secured following the decision of the Regional Council and signing of contract."

In a radio interview, Corfu Nea Dimokratia MP Stefanos Gikas talked about the recent Ionian Islands Regional Council approval of the conclusion of a programme contract between the Ionian Islands Regional Administration, the Harbour Masters Offices in Zakynthos, Cephalonia & Ithaka, Lefkada and Meganisi and the Greek Cities Development Network (DEPAN) to establish a waterways network in the Ionian Islands.

Mr. Gikas told ERA Kerkyra Radio that with the aforementioned signature, the extension and operation of the waterways network was now confirmed. He said this was a significant development as it will speed up the procedure for licensing, equipping and operation of new waterways.

He explained that Corfu and Paxos weren't included in the contract as they already have licensed waterways. The aim of the signatories is for the contract to be fulfilled in six months once it comes into force. The cost of the work will be completely covered by the Public Investment Programme and consequently there will be no cost to the Region.

The MP praised the Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa and the Regional Council for approving the contract as this will now lead to the swift completion of the extended Ionian Islands waterways network - a Government pilot programme.

He stressed that for Nea Dimokratia an extensive waterways network was a basic tool for development and that the Government is implementing its pre-election promises. He reiterated the benefits of having a waterways network including the development of tourism in the Ionian Islands.
