CORFU. Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told the Municipal Council that everything is ready to go ahead with the restoration of the historical monument.

The leader of the 'Prota I Kerkyra' party Giorgos Kaloudis asked about progress on the restoration of the Annunziata bell tower.

"Annunziata is a religious and historical monument. It was destroyed along with hundreds of other public and private buildings - chief of which was the Municipal Theatre - on the night of 13-14 September 1943 by fascist bombs.

Many of Corfu's brave fighters who were killed in the 1571 Nafpaktos Naval Battle were buried in the building and there is an inscription kept by Corfu Catholic Church.

The other dead were buried in St. Nicola de Vecchia.

300 Corfiots fought in the Nafpaktos Naval battle in 4 ships captained by Petros Bouas, Christophoros Kontokalis, Giorgos Kokkinis and Stylianos Halikiopoulos.

On numerous occasions organisations, ministers, MPs, Mayors have called for its immediate restoration.

We have heard a lot about surveys which are ready for tenders but haven't seen any work yet.

My questions are:

1. Do you have the survey in your hands?
2. Why has the commencement of work been announced so many times and yet nothing has happened?
3. If you have the survey then why hasn't the work been put out to tender?"

In response, the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros said that the contract for the work was signed on 26/11/2019 and work is expected to go ahead immediately.

The Mayor added that there is a practical problem with a tenant who is 'occupying' the basement of the bell tower despite notices from the Municipality. She said that together with the Catholic Church and the Ministry of Culture the necessary legal steps will be taken to remove the tenant.
