CORFU. The Fire Service has sent the Municipal Council a request for an emergency lane for fire engines and ambulances.
Following its relocation to the building in Ioulia Andreadi St. (former hospital), the Fire Service will have to deal with the traffic congestion that exists in that particular street in summer and in winter.
Corfu Fire Service Personnel Union has sent a letter to the Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros and Municipal Council President Dimitris Metallinos requesting that measures be taken to create an emergency lane so that Fire Service vehicles can move freely.
The letter:
Ms. Mayor,
As you know, the 1st Fire Station will be relocating from Zafiropoulou St & Marasli to the building in Andreadi St.. We have pointed out many times that a lot of renovation work still needs to be completed internally, in the yard and in the prefab building in order to provide suitable conditions for our personnel and, more importantly, to allow our service to be fully and properly operational and in readiness at all levels.
When we relocate to the building in Andreadi St. we will have to face the most serious problem of all which is the traffic congestion in that road and we remind you that there is only one entrance for the vehicles going towards the town and the historical centre and only one exit for vehicles going out of town towards Paleokastritsa, Pelekas, Lefkimmi etc. as compared to the Fire Station's present location where there are three separate roads we can use even if it means closing the road and going in the opposite direction to the traffic.
Every day there are dozens of cars parked on both sides of Andreadis St. When there is rain or in the tourist season there is a constant gridlock in the street with cars, buses and lorries and, as mentioned above, there is only one exit for us.
We would like to request that a proposal be put to the Municipal Council to create an emergency lane for fire engines and other emergency vehicles at least as far as San Rocco Square and Platytera in the opposite direction.
We would also like to request that you and the Municipal Council also consider looking into extending the emergency lanes to all the streets in the historical centre - which would satisfy us as well as the police and ambulance services.
Yours Sincerely,
Spyros Latsas - President
Ioannis Lisos - General Secretary
