KOZANI. On Monday 11th the board of DIADYMA (West Macedonia Waste Management)will meet to discuss the issue of Corfu waste and how the Kozani facility will be able to take it.

The West Macedonia Waste Management (DIADYMA) Board will meet on Monday 11 November to officially confirm the Government's 3-year plan to transport waste from Corfu to the Kozani facility - until Corfu has its own Integrated Waste Management Facility.

The decision of the board cannot, of course, be predicted with certainty but the feeling is - although not a certainty - that they will give the green light to the project.

24,000 tons to go to Kozani now...how much in the future?

There is justified concern regarding how much waste the Kozani facility can accept. At the Environment Ministry it has been said that at the moment Kozani cannot accept more than 24,000 tons.

DIADYMA Managing Director Dimosthenis Mavridis told Enimerosi he same thing last week - creating some doubts following the 'euphoric' initial response to last week's meeting in Athens.

Amendment of environmental regulations at the facility

It was, however, known that the limit on the amount of waste that can be processed at the West Macedonian facility can be amended - which explains the certainty expressed by the Municipality and the Corfu MPs.

At the moment Kozani can process 120,000 tons of waste annually - allowing for 24 - 25,000 tons from Corfu - but this doesn't mean that that limit can't be increased to 150 or 160,000 tons annually! How? By amending the environmenatl regulations for the Waste Management Facility!

According to people at the Ministry, this procedure can theoretically take a long time, but when it is to the benefit of all sides the process can be significantly speeded up.

Win-win for all the 'players'

It can be to the benefit of all sides in the following ways:

Following an amendment to the environmental regulations DIADYMA will be able to accept larger amounts of waste - leading to an increase in income. win #1

Sending a significant amount of waste to West Macedonia will relieve Corfu of its huge problem. Taking into account that recycling on the island is on the increase (sorting at source, Green Spots etc.), Corfu will send, for example, 50,000 tons a year to Kozani - which the facility there will be able to accept if the environmental regulations are amended. win #2

The Ministry for the Environment & Energy - and by extension the ND Government - will be able to demonstrate its efficiency in solving this chronic Corfu problem, which the previous SYRIZA Government, Regional and Local Authorities couldn't solve in their full 5-year term. Kyriakos Mitsotakis has on several occasions talked about the previous Government's failure to solve the waste problem - citing the situation in Corfu. win #3
