CORFU. Temploni Cultural Society has issued a statement demanding the removal of waste from Corfu, changes to PESDA (Regional Waste Management Plan) and permanent removal of all damaging types of use of the area.

Temploni Cultural Society issued a statement reaffirming its position on the waste management facility in the area:

"Following the latest developments and the actions taken at Temploni landfill, the Cultural Society wishes to REAFFIRM its BASIC POSITION to avoid any misunderstanding from the local and Corfu public.

- Permanent removal of any type of damaging usage in the Temploni area.
- NO KIND of waste management in the Temploni area.
- IMMEDIATE restoration of the landfill and surrounding area.
- IMMEDIATE sorting at source - recycling - composting.
- NO TO THE MIXED WASTE FACILITY.
- IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF WASTE FROM CORFU ON A TEMPORARY BASIS TO A LEGAL RECIPIENT (whether baled or not).
- CHANGES TO PESDA (amendment with the exemption of Temploni and surrounding area).

The Society's planned actions are continuing in full awareness of the current tragic situation at Temploni landfill and in Corfu in general as regards waste management and all our efforts are directed at fulfilling our basic positions on the matter.

We believe that Corfu's waste problem is something that affects the whole island and should be dealt with by the authorities without trying to divide the communities for their own political and economic ends, using weak-willed, paid or unpaid pawns to achieve their goals.

We would also like to state that we do not consider any kind of MIXED waste management facility to be a solution to Corfu's problem - on the contrary, it would make the situation worse and cause irreversible damage to the environment and public health."
