CORFU. Corfu Municipality Technical Department has begun inspections and maintenance work following the tragic incident with a 19-year-old in Chios.
Following a letter from the Ministry for the Interior all Municipalities must carry out immediate inspections of their sports grounds, playgrounds and recreational areas. Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos sent the following letter to all the Greek Municipalities:
"Dear Mayor,
As you know, on the night of 4 August there was a tragic incident in Daskalopetra in Chios. The collapse of a basketball hoop and backboard cost the life of a young 19-year-old.
I would like you, as a matter of urgency, to inspect all Municipal sports grounds, playgrounds and recreational areas in general to ensure that they comply with European regulations and are safe for all who use them.
I would like to remind you that, according to the relevant legislation, it is the Municipality's responsibility to maintain sports grounds and children's playgrounds and ensure the safety of recreational areas that are your responsibility. I expect all the inspections to have been carried out by the end of August to prevent any accidents and to ensure we don't mourn any further victims.
Takis Theodorikakos
Minister for the Interior"
Following the Minister's orders, Municipal crews have begun to inspect all the sports grounds and recreational areas. Deputy Mayor for Technical Services Andreas Goulis told Enimerosi that each district has engineers supervising the inspections.
