CORFU. The pilgrimage to the Pantokrator Monastery for the celebration of the Metamorphosis of the Saviour begins on Thursday 1 August.
The pilgrimage lasts six days and on each day large numbers of believers climb to the highest point in Corfu (906m) with its unrivalled view.
In ancient times the mountain was called Istoni and its present-day name of Pantokrator comes from the monastery of the same name which was built near the summit in the 14th century.
On the Saviour's Day (6/8) and Eve (5/8) there will be a traditional fair in the picturesque village of Strinilas athe foot of the mountain. There will be a fair in Petalia on 4 August.
