CORFU. A new start with a new CAT Scanner at Corfu Hospital.

The scanner has been installed and the personnel trained in its use. After many years with the previous obsolete and problematic equipment the hospital now has a 16-section scanner and patients can be examined in the hospital instead of being sent to private diagnostic centres. The second, more modern, 64-section scanner - which has been funded by the Ionian Islands Regional ESPA - is expected within the next six months. This scanner will also be capable of carrying out coronary scans - which are normally carried out at Level 3 hospitals.

Corfu Hospital Director Phivos Kakavitsas said, "From today we can return to normal service with the 24-hour operation of the new CAT Scanner.

The training of the first group of technicians has been completed and so from today at 23:00 the new scanner will start operating on a 24-hour basis.

We would like to thank all those involved in the speedy installation (5 days) of the equipment and training of personnel (10 days).

Above all, however, the administration would like to thank the department's technicians and medical personnel for taking in the training for the new scanner and contrast injector system so quickly. The training of the remaining technicians will be completed next week."
