CORFU. A shared concern for the dead end in which the issue of waste management finds itself brought people together at a meeting in Temploni.

Representatives from associations, organisations, local political parties and voluntary Green Spots came together at Temploni Cultural Society on Wednesday 10 July. The coordinating committee says there is "a common committment from everyone to coordinated actions in the immediate future".

Statement

With the seeming dead end at which the issue of waste management finds itself in Corfu and the inability yet again this summer of those responsible to come up with a proper solution, a meeting was held with representatives from associations, organisations, local political parties and voluntary Green Spots at Temploni Cultural Society on Wednesday 10 July.

Everyone expressed their great concern at the lack of refuse collection, the piling up of rubbish at the roadside and in makeshift rubbish dumps throughout the island and the consequent risks to public health, the agreed 'restoration' of Temploni landfill and the proposed interim waste management system - using methods that are unsafe for the environment (baling, dumping) - leading to the creation of new rubbish dumps at Temploni and Lefkimmi.

All present at the meeting supported the fair and feasible demand for the immediate temporary and safe removal of waste from the island to be processed at a legal facility outside Corfu. This will allow the new local authorities to have serious discussions with the community in Corfu in order to establish an environmentally sound and socially just integrated waste management system on our island.

Moreover, all those present recognised the immediate need for sorting at source, recycling and composting.

Finally, following the dynamic, leading role played by Temploni Cultural Society in its ongoing fight for the quality of our life there was a written committment from all to coordinated actions in the immediate future.
