CORFU. It seems to good to be true but Corfu Hospital will have two new modern CAT Scanners.

The first, a 16-section scanner, has already been installed and will be in operation in a few days. At a small 'ceremony' for its installation the Director and Hospital Board presented the equipment, which is still being assembled. The new scanner has solved the problem the hospital has had for about ten years - the old 1-section scanner kept malfunctioning as its service life was until 2011!

Along with the obvious problems for patients the malfunctioning of the scanner cost the hospital 1,000 - 1,500 Euros a day as the patients had to be sent to private diagnostic centres.

At yesterday's event the Hospital Director Phivos Kakavitsas announced that in five months at the most the hospital will have a second scanner with even newer technology and greater definition. The 64-section scanner, funded by the Ionian Islands Regional ESPA, is also capable of carrying out coronary scans - which are normally carried out at Level 3 hospitals.

With two CAT scanners the public health service in Corfu will become much more autonomous - a matter of especial importance on an island.
