CORFU. The library was officially opened today on the 1st floor of Corfu General Hospital.

The new library, something quite innovative in Greece, was opened in Corfu General Hospital today. A library rich in content - medical, children's and adult literature. It also has a collection of old books - heirlooms from the 18th and 19th centuries which, until recently, had been lying in the damp hospital basement but have now been rescued and catalogued.

It is now open for use and is using the Library Management software openABEKT - the most widely used and scientifically proven programme in Greek libraries. With the direct electronic access to scientific magazines and articles that already exists the library can also function as a source of scientific information for staff and a source of information for children and adult patients or visitors to the hospital.

Dr. Petros Kostayiolas

It was a demanding, painstaking and time-consuming project led over the last three years by Professor Petros Kostayiolas from the Department of Library Science and Archives at the Ionian University who, with the aid of students, personnel and the administration 'built' a facility in the hospital which significantly improves the quality of service provided.

The new library, which was created in collaboration with the National Documentation Centre, TABM students, the organisation 'For Our Children', cultural societies and private donors of equipment, will be used by both patients and visitors.

The aim is to make the books accessible to all, even those with mobility difficulties, as the books will be taken on trolleys from ward to ward just as in other countries.

The library has been named 'Spyridoula Alexaki' in honour of the late Corfu General Hospital nurse. In his address, Petros Kostayiolas told of how moved he was when he saw the remarkable willingness of volunteers to help right from the start. "That is a small ray of hope," he said.
