CORFU. The Rainbow Warrior is now moored in Corfu Port and will remain here for two days (21 & 22 June).
The ship is in Greece as part of Greenpeace's European campaign to tackle the climate crisis, to promote the use of clean energy from renewable sources and to protest against the use of fossil fuels. The aim is to support the local community in its fight against the mining of hydrocarbons and to highlight the climate crisis we are facing.
On Friday 21 June the boat will be open to the public from 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00. On Saturday 22 June it will be open to the public from 18:00 to 20:00. Visitors will have the opportunity to go on a guided tour of this historical vessel, to see an exhibition of photographs showing the repercussions of climate change, the solutions available to protect our climate as well as to take part in various activities for young and old.
On 21 June between 17:00 and 20:30 there will also be a workshop 'Together for an energy transition in Greece' on board the Rainbow Warrior about the benefits of energy communities and initiatives in Greece. On 22 June those involved in opposing drilling for hydrocarbons in Greece will share information about the fight in Europe and the rest of the world against the exploitation of hydrocarbons and use of fossil fuels. The countdown for destructive global warming has begun and the consequences on an economic, social and environmental level of the production of lignite will destroy all the dreams of local communities.
Scientists have warned that we have 11 years to halve the use of fossil fuels and prevent irreversible climate change. We find ourselves in a climate emergency. We demand climate and energy policies in line with scientific recommendations to hold global temperature at 1.5°C. We demand an end to the economy's dependence on fossil fuels by 2040, promotion of energy-saving and clean sources of energy and the cancellation of all plans for the mining of hydrocarbons in this country. We demand that all the political forces in the country recognise what is at stake and that the new parliament that is formed following the general elections votes to declare a climate emergency in the country just as other European parliaments have already done. It is our right to protect our lives and our country and together we can do it!
