CORFU. Celebrations took place today for the 155th anniversary of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.

The official events began with a service at the Church of St. Spyridon led by Nektarios Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands.

There then followed a talk by Mr. Metaxas, member of the European Interdisciplinary Academy, on "The European Legalisation of a Struggle for Unification". This was followed by the laying of wreaths at the Ionian Islands Unification Monument and a minute's silence was observed in memory of those who fought for the unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.

The parade then took place with groups in traditional costumes, primary and secondary school pupils, university students, the Red Cross, guides, scouts, armed forces and police accompanied by Corfu, 'Mantzaros', 'Capodistrias' and Ano Korakiana 'Spyros Samaras' Philharmonic Bands.
