CORFU. Just as every year the St. Spyridon procession set off at 09:00 from the Church of St. Spyridon.
The procession first took place in 1550 when Corfu was saved from famine. What is peculiar to Corfu as opposed to the rest of Greece is that the Epitaphios takes place at the same time - a custom that was established at the time of the Venetian rule because the Venetians forbade Epitaphios processions in the town.
Traditionally Corfu 'Old' Philharmonic Band plays Franco Faccio's 'Hamlet', 'Mantzaros' Band plays Michelli's 'Calde Lacrime' and 'Capodistrias' Band plays Beethoven's 'Eroica'.
Thousands of tourists and visitors from all over Greece witnessed the processions including Panayiotis Kouroublis and Elena Kountoura from the Government.
