Cross at the top of the Old Fortress will be lit up this Easter

The fact that the cross remained unlit last Easter provoked controversary as it had always been a traditional and symbolic part of the celebrations - adding colour, literally, to the atmosphere.

Due to age, the framework holding the cross cannot take the weight of cables, lights and other equipment so this year another solution has been found. Light will be projected onto the cross in such a way that it will create the same image as in previous years with the purple of mourning during Easter Week and then lit up in white light following the Resurrection.

The effect will be created by laser spot lights and the Archaeological Service, the Ionian University and other experts are working together to set up and operate the system.
