CORFU. Corfu Hospital administration has issued a statement listing the improvements that have been made in the quality of service provided for patients and all who use the hospital.

1. New seating outside the hospital. Number of seats in the Outpatients waiting area doubled.

- The replacement of seating outside the hospital has been completed with 10 new benches. Apart from the convenience of those waiting outside, perhaps more importantly it improves the image outside as most of the previous seating had been damaged for years - giving the impression of abandonment as well as being injury risks.

- Since January there has been a significant increase in the number of seats in the Outpatients waiting area - If we take into account those that were repaired years ago and placed in front of the reception, then the number has more than doubled. There was no cost for this as seating from other areas in the hospital was transferred and any repairs were done cost-free by the local representative.

2. Monitoring hygiene standards in public areas - New soap holders and cleansing materials in public toilets.

a.The lack of cleansing materials since the hospital moved to the new building in 2010 has been remedied. The installation of new soap holders and soap was the final matter to be taken care of in the provision of sanitary materials for users of the hospital. For the last two years there has been sufficient provision of toilet paper for both patients' and public toilets.

b. For a month now a new system has been implemented to monitor hygiene standards in the public toilets. In collaboration with the cleaning crew, which is now made up of hospital staff, a new regular and ongoing system of cleaning is being implemented with checks at specific times to ensure that the toilets are always in good condition.

3. Written correspondence has been abolished at the hospital - a new electronic patient screening system has been set up and new computers have been acquired for the Emergency Department.

a. The introduction of a new electronic protocol system has been completed. Incoming correspondence is scanned, given a unique electronic reference number and barcode and forwarded to the departments and personnel. This obviously economises on resources (purchase of paper) as well as on human resources which previously had to physically distribute any correspondence to departments.

b. The new electronic patient screening system has been completed. The new software has been added to and is already being implemented by the Emergency Department allowing laboratory tests to be ordered, results automatically added to patients' files and immediate admission to the appropriate department. This gets rid of all the previous bureaucratic procedures. For this reason the Emergency Department has acquired three new computers.
