Corfu Hospital

CORFU. Corfu Hospital Director Phivos Kakavitsas analyzes the figures for 2018.

According to the press release issued by the hospital administration there was a significant increase in the number of people served by the hospital in 2018.

The significant increase in the number of personnel (medical and nursing) in 2018 is reflected for the second year running in the increase in the number of people served by the hospital. It shows that Corfu Hospital is regaining the trust of the public.

This increase, in practice, also indicates a corresponding decrease in the departure of medical personnel over the last two years - the statistics compared to 2016 are as follows:

- In the chemotherapy department there was an average annual increase of 15% in the number of chemotherapy sessions. This means that in 2018 and 2017 991 less transfers elsewhere were necessary compared to 2016. In 2018 there was a total of 3,089 sessions in the special therapy department (compared to 2,702 in 2017 and 2,400 in 2016).

- There were 4,303 surgical operations of all types (compared to 3,474 in 2016) - an average increase of approximately 23%. Compared to 2016 a total of 2,109 patients over the last two years didn't need to leave Corfu to undergo surgery.

- The Emergency Department, which was set up at the end of 2016, received 38,422 patients in 2018 (compared to 36,644 in 2017) - an increase of 1,778 or 4.85%.

It would naturally have been impossible to deal with this increase without the following increases in recent years:

- 30.3% in medical personnel
- 2m Euros or 15% funding from the Ministry of Health in the regular budget plus extra funding
- 10% or over 1m per year in the utilisation of available funds from the budgets over the last two years.

It is clear that the major part of this success should be attributed to the personnel who, seeing the real efforts being made to improve the hospital, in turn did their very best to contribute to this success.
