CORFU. This longstanding request from the Regional Corfu Special Needs Association has now been satisfied with 11 parking spots in Corfu Town.
The free parking spaces are already being prepared and will be strictly for those with the special international sticker (no name required) which must be clearly visible on the windscreen of the vehicle.
The eight new spots will be in the following locations:
- 2 spots next to the entrance to the open-air market in Lohagou Vlaikou St.
- 2 spots in Ioanni Theotokoi St. next to the junction with Andrea Andreadi St.
- 2 spots in Mitropoliti Methodiou St. on the left before the junction with San Rocco Square.
- 1 spot in St. Desylla St. at the corner of the Ionian Islands Regional building.
- 1 spot in Kon. Zavitsianou St. by the entrance to the Employment Office (OAED).
The following spots will also be available which had been approved at an earlier Council meeting:
- 1 spot in Panos Zafiropoulou St. by the entrance to the 'Glass Tower'.
- 1 spot in St. Desylla St. at the side of the Municipal Theatre.
- 1 spot at the junction of Alexandras Ave., Alkinou St. and Dino Theotoki St. next to the pedestrian crossing in Alkinou St.
These parking spaces are available for any member of the public with special needs to park when in town - they are not reserved by name.
The measure will come into force once the required signs have been placed.
The Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare Andreas Skoupouras, who is also President of the Regional Committee for Special Needs, said that he was happy that this longstanding need was at last being fulfilled. "The only thing that could delay us now is the weather," he said.
Corfu Traffic Police will be responsible for the proper use of the spaces - along with everyone's consciousness!
