CORFU. An article in Corriere della Sera about the ΄designer΄ waste incinerator in Copenhagen has been doing the rounds on the internet.
The building will not only deal with waste management but will also be a leisure facility as it has been constructed in such a way as to have a ski slope.
According to the article in Corriere Della Sera, which was republished in Protagon.gr, the facility operated as a refuse incinerator for over 50 years before the operation ceased. There were then thoughts as to how it could be utilised again as the authorities wanted to renovate it in such a way as to be environmentally-friendly and to also have a double function. After almost three years of studies and the construction of an ambitious plan, costing 520m Euros, they managed it. The incinerator, which began trial operations in 2017, is now coming to the end of the trial period and hopes to be a prime example of a building in a town which is ecologically, economically and socially sustainable.
According to the article, although skiing is a popular sport, the Danes had a problem as their country is completely flat!
"For this reason the roof of the building was designed as a slope in order to create a 600m ski slope for all the city's skiers," says Corriere. When the facility opens there are expected to be nearly 60,000 visitors in the first year - who won't be going to see how waste is converted into energy but to enjoy the ski slope on the roof of the facility.
So why not take this idea and apply it to Temploni landfill in Corfu! The facility could easily be constructed in Temploni - and the mountains are already there (the rubbish)! We could thus provide an environmentally-friendly tourist resort combining the redevelopment of the landfill with the extension of the tourist season. We've certainly got the mountains!
