CORFU. The problem with the refuse is getting worse. The Association says it will take whatever legal action is necessary.
Corfu Medical Association issued a press release regarding the serious risk to public health due to the piles of refuse which have been gathering for such a long time.
At the start of the school year Corfu finds itself in a tragic situation as regards the management and collection of refuse. The piles of rubbish that have been building up in public areas and the ongoing inability to manage and collect the waste has created a permanent risk to public health which is completely unacceptable.
At a meeting with the local authorities at the beginning of August the Medical Association expressed its deep concern for the risk to public health due to the ongoing dumping of large amounts of rubbish on the roads and on rubbish tips, as well as the unsafe dumping, storage and management in locations considered to be deposit areas and the unsafe work environments for those working in the cleansing services. We stressed in no uncertain terms that the problem was a threat to public health.
Despite the assurances of the local authorities at the meeting that the problem would be settled towards the end of September, it has become clear that things have got worse and the situation has become permanent.
Because of the risk to public health and the continued deterioration in the environment Corfu Medical Association is determined to to take whatever legal action is necessary to protect the public health.
