CORFU. Lefkimmi residents΄ protest convoy on Sunday night was blocked by police at the turn-off to the airport.

Police prevented the protestors from heading towards the sirport and the centre of town. According to some reports, chemicals were used.

The protestors, who intended to go to the airport and hand out leaflets, got out of their cars and the atmosphere became charged. They then proceeded towards the Three Bridges junction to stage a protest there, blocking access to Corfu Town from the south. There was confusion on the roads and there were a few small incidents with drivers protesting.

Traffic was blocked and it was impossible for the tourist coaches to get past - passengers had to get off and walk the rest of the way with their luggage through the gathered protestors who were handing out leaflets.

The protestors then headed for the centre of Corfu Town, passing through San Rocco Square and ending up at Pentofanero, where they blocked off Capodistrias St. to hold a short demonstration against Lefkimmi landfill. There was a strong police presence in the area.
