CORFU. It΄s estimated that the young turtles will hatch at the beginning of September.

On 14 July a Caretta Caretta turtle chose the beach at Agios Giorgios Argyradon to lay her eggs.

Three weeks later, the local councillor and vet Leonidas Pangratis visited the spot to check if the temporary 'fencing' that he and other bathers had placed was still secure.

He was especially pleased to see that the temporary protection had, in fact, been improved. Netting had been placed around the spot and a sign had been attached by Corfu Ecological Society in four languages.

Despite the fact that it is a busy beach, bathers respect and protect the area.

It is estimated that the young turtles will hatch at the beginning of September - and return as mothers in several years' time to lay their own eggs, ensuring the much-needed continuation of the species in the Mediterranean.
