CORFU. Hundreds of visitors to Palaiokastritsa on Saturday night witnessed a spectacular re-enactment of Odysseus΄ (Ulysses) shipwreck on the island of the Phaeacians.

Crowds of people gather on the beach every year to watch this fantastic event.

The programme included Mandolinata (mandolin & guitar music), traditional dances and majorettes. The main part, though, was the re-enactment of the shipwreck of Odysseus accompanied by a narration in Greek and English. Legend has it that the God of the Sea Poseidon emerged from the depths of the sea enraged at Odysseus, who had blinded his son - the Cyclops Polyphemus, and created a terrible storm which caused the shipwreck of Odysseus on Corfu's shores. It was there that he met Princess Nausicaa (Nafsika).

This was followed by a beach party with lots of music and the event concluded with an impressive firework display.

Co-organized by Lakones Musical & Cultural Society and Corfu Municipal Environmental, Sport and Cultural Organization (DOPAP).
