waste management

CORFU. The report has been published following the inspection of Temploni landfill by the Regional Environmental Department.
The inspection was carried out on April 16 following the request from Temploni Cultural Society, although it is not the first time the department has carried out an inspection.
The report could be said to be stating the obvious as it basically confirms officially the illegalities of the waste management system there. Perhaps it would have been news if it hadn't!
The inspection team confirmed yet again that the environmental regulations for the operation of the facility are not being observed.
Some of the observations:
- Unprocessed landfill leachate is flowing uncontrolled into the natural environment.
- The major bulk of refuse is dumped at Unit 3 without having been processed (baling).
- The material set aside to be composted, apart from the inadequate method of separation leading to a small end product, includes a large amount of foreign, non-biodegradable materials.
- Waste bales have been dumped in the composting area.
- Waste leaks were observed at several points around the perimeter of Unit A. These end up on the road and then into the natural environment.
Unfortunately, the report merely confirms - with the 'stamp' of the Environmental Department - what has been said for a long time by Temploni Cultural Society, on-the-spot local media reports and more recently the detailed TEE report.
What remains to be seen is whether all these reports will produce any actual results or if they will simply result in some fines being imposed.
