Kontokali junction - an accident waiting to happen: traffic lights not working

CORFU. Vehicles and pedestrians crossing as and when they want - whenever they think they can ΄make it΄.
The traffic lights at Kontokali junction have been out of operation for over ten days now. Vehicles and pedestrians just take their chances - crossing whenever they think they can make it.
It is a busy junction with most traffic travelling at high speed and there is a history of accidents happening here even when the traffic lights are working.
In the immediate area of the junction there is a large supermarket (AB Vassilopoulos) as well as coffee shops and restaurants, mini-markets and ATMs. The turn-off for Gouvia Marina is also located there along with the primary school and all the Kontokali shops.
U-turns are also legal at the junction for vehicles coming from Alykes and there is a busy turn-off nearby for Gerekou Island (Kontokali football pitch, beach, Kontokali Bay Hotel).
