Mourning for the death of Eleni in Afra and Corfu - questions being asked about her death
CORFU. The tragic victim Eleni Spitieri-Panaretou (56) was taken to hospital by car but was already dead.
According to hospital sources, attempts by doctors to revive her by machine proved fruitless and her death was confirmed. The time was just after 17:00 on Sunday – a tragic end to a celebratory party, leaving her family, friends and everyone who knew her in mourning when the news quickly spread. Everyone, naturally, wanted to know what had happened and how.
The party had been arranged for Sunday and was for family and friends to celebrate a small child’s christening. It took place at the Kardakari Estate behind a well-known restaurant near the road leading to Ropa Valley.
Police have been taking statements from those present in order to put together a picture of what happened. The victim was shot in the stomach by a gun which had been fired during the celebrations. The details are as yet unknown – who the gun belongs to and how it came to be used.
This is what the police are trying to determine but until late last night no arrests had been announced nor the ownership of the gun. Local residents in Afra are in a state of shock and have cancelled the village fair on 6th May in mourning for Eleni, who was well-loved in the village.
In one of these horrible coincidences, the village fair was also cancelled last year in mourning for the death of another resident, Nikos Halikias, who worked at the airport.
