CORFU. Family tragedy early this morning in Corfu.

A 62-year-old ex-policeman shot and killed his 56-year-old wife with a hunting gun in Alevropari in South Corfu.

According to sources close to the family, the woman had gone out last night with friends to celebrate International Women’s Day. When she came home the couple had a big argument which ended up with the husband shooting and killing her.

The 62-year-old retired policeman then gave himself in to the police.

According to the same sources, the couple had recently been having problems in their relationship. The 56-year-old wife had two children from a previous marriage, as did the husband. One of her children, who lives on the top floor, on hearing the shots climbed onto the balcony with a ladder and broke the glass to get in - only to find his mother dead.

This morning (9th March) a 62-year-old local man was arrested and charged with intentional homicide and illegal use of a firearm.
The man had an argument with his 56-year-old wife this morning in Chlomatiano and then shot her with a hunting gun and killed her.

Shortly afterwards, the man came voluntarily to the police station, where he was arrested. The gun with which he had shot his wife was found and impounded.

The man is being questioned and will be taken to the Prosecutor’s Office.
