Installation of Metropolitan Church marble throne referred to public prosecutor!
CORFU. The installation of a marble throne and two marble shrines in the Metropolitan Church of Agios Theodoros has provoked a backlash from believers and representatives of Corfu cultural organizations.
The Corfu TV channel, Start TV, brought the matter to light in a television report this Sunday and said that the marble decorations had been a gift from a Russian believer. The complaints led to the intervention of the Inspectorate for Antiquities, which is responsible for all monuments, including those in churches. In cases such as this their approval is required and written permission needs to be given. As this did not happen, the Archaeological Department is demanding that the large marble installations be removed and have referred the matter to the Public Prosecutor.
It is understood that the throne and the shrines were installed in mid-December. The Metropolitan Church has declined to comment on the matter.
