CORFU. A 24-year-old Albanian in Sidari charged people for online forecasts of football results, using a fake social media profile and receiving pre-payment by bank cards.

The investigation into the case began following complaints that an internet user was committing an offence regarding online games. The 24-year-old, using various profiles on social media, charged other social media users for his fake match forecasts.

He received data from people’s pre-paid cards, which he then used for online betting. Police carried out a digital investigation, communicating with social media and internet companies, and were able to establish his identity.

In a legal search of the man’s house in north Corfu, near Sidari, the Cyber Crime Unit and local police found and confiscated a mobile phone and three hard drives and were able to confirm that he had been acting illegally. The evidence will be sent to the forensics department for further laboratory investigation.

Charges were drawn up against the 24-year-old Albanian for fraud, illegal online games and other betting offences and laundering money gained from illegal activities. The charge document was submitted to the Public Prosecutor and investigations are continuing to see if the accused has been involved in any other similar illegal activities.

The Cyber Crime Unit would like to stress that the provision of unlicensed games services is a serious crime, which is regarded as a felony, and that the participation in unlicensed games is also an offence.

They would also like to remind people that anyone (anonymously if need be) can contact the Cyber Crime Unit with any information they may have or to report illegal online activities in the following ways:
