Corfu expecting a lot from regional meeting

Kostas Pavlidis

CORFU.This was clearly stated by Corfu SYRIZA MP Kostas Pavlidis, at a press conference. "Waste management, water supply, road construction, health and education are the main prefectural issues that need to be discussed at the upcoming Development Conference on 4-5 December, which will be attended by the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Government Ministers.”

Regional Development Conference

“The Ionian Islands and especially Corfu are expecting a lot from the upcoming development conference. It is not a coincidence that the regional conferences (for islands) are beginning from the Ionian, as this region has been treated unfairly up to now in the island policies of all the previous governments.

There needs to be a mobilisation of all the local authorities, chambers and manufacturers, so that the conference can lead to important planning studies for the next decade.”

He listed waste management, water supply, road construction, health and education as the major prefectural issues that should be raised at the upcoming regional development conference.

Education

Mr. Pavlidis stated that, as regards education, there needs to be a review of land use planning and expressed his view that two new decentralised technical schools should be established - in north and south Corfu.

Health care system
In the health sector, he noted that we are finally close to the break-up of the 6th Health District and that we have to decide - preferably through public consultation - if there is a sound basis for creating a health region in the Ionian Islands or whether Corfu should be connected to the mainland coast for operational reasons and because of the existing hospital support in Ioannina. This prospect, however, should in no way mean the dissolution of the regional administration of the Ionian Islands.

In fact, Mr. Pavlidis added, "It’s a positive step that the ‘monstrous’ 6th Health District will finally be dissolved. I heard Mr. Mitsotakis’ announcements in Ioannina about the creation of 13 new regional health services. He should tell us why his party didn’t do this when they were in government. When there were problems nobody decided to dissolve the 6th Health District – instead, there were dismissals. Announcements and declarations are fine, but it is better to put policy into action. We are going to put it in action through public consultation. There is no need for panic and fearmongering. The Health Ministry and the health sector will sit down and try to find the best solution for the people.”
