1st Open Water swimming race held around Corfu Old Fortress(Photos-Video)

CORFU.In extremely favourable weather conditions, NAOK (Corfu Sea Sports Club) held its 1st Open Water swimming race yesterday in honour of Aris Mouzakitis, the firefighter who lost his life this summer.

NAOK aims to establish The Open Water ‘Race Around the Old Fortress’ as an annual event, the club’s President, Tilemachos Gavalas, said. This first race was in memory of Aris Mouzakitis, the firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty this summer and who was also a member of the club’s water polo team.
Over the years, NAOK has supported sport and education and given to the local community in many ways and continues to promote the social and educational aspect of modern sport. In the last two years alone, the club has regularly organized and taken part in events for young people and the community in general which aim to promote alternative forms of education.
As well as the swimming race, yesterday’s event also included other activities -            getting acquainted with the different types of sailing boats and two talks: ‘Marine Firefighting’ and ‘Dealing with Marine Pollution’.
