CORFU. The local council discussion about the much-debated Operating Regulation for the Old Town went on till midnight, with a record number of residents and business people

from the Old Town turning up at the meeting. The subject had already been suspended at a previous council meeting when more information was requested by councillors. However, following a meeting between the Old Town Association and the Deputy Mayor for Business, Aris Balis, agreement couldn’t be reached. Business people have come out against the ‘Regulation’ as they consider that it will be disastrous for businesses in the Old Town.

At Tuesday’s meeting presentations were made by representatives of residents (Alekos Mirilas and Spyros Kassimis) as well as business representatives (Alekos Litsardopoulos, Costas Mouzakitis and Giorgos Tseremis). The Deputy Mayor for Trade also faced a lot of insistent questioning from the councillors of all the opposition parties.

There was intense discussion and at times the debate became quite heated so that in the end, as midnight approached, the Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos had to intervene in order to calm things down. “Do we all agree that there needs to be an Operating Regulation?” he asked. There was unanimous agreement and the issue was withdrawn from discussion yet again following Mr Nikolouzos’ undertaking to be in charge of a new round of talks between the parties.
