Greek President to Visit Corfu for Capodistrias Events

CORFU. The President of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, will visit Corfu on Sunday 15 October to attend the special events in honour of the first Governor of Modern Greece,

Ioannis Capodistrias, whose birthplace was Corfu. The events are being organized by the Region of Ionian Islands under the auspices of the Greek President.
The organization of these events follows on from the visit of a delegation from Corfu led by the Regional Governor, Theodoros Galiatsatos, to the Greek President in February, 2017. At the meeting it was agreed that there was a need for an initiative to promote the political and historical importance of Kapodistrias’ work and for Corfu to honour the first Governor.

The President agreed to the events being held under his auspices and also that they should be held annually in Corfu, birthplace and burial place of Ioannis Capodistrias. He has honoured his commitment by agreeing to be present at the first of these events on Sunday 15 October, 2017.

11.00     Religious Liturgy at the Tomb of Capodistrias at Platytera.
12.00     Inauguration of the Capodistrias Museum at Koukouritsa (organizedbythe Capodistrias Museum)
17.30     Event at the Ionian Academy
- Talk by Professor AnastasiosIoannis Metaxas, Athens University: “Ioannis Capodistrias and the ‘other’ Europe.”
- Theatrical performance from Natalia Capodistria: “Dialogue between the Governor and Georgios Mavromichalis.”
- Concert by the Corfu Philharmonic Society.

The Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Theodoros Galiatsos, made the following statement: “We have set out on this great endeavour with the aim of establishing the events in honour of Ioannis Capodistrias as an annual celebration. It is our duty to honour the First Governor of Greece in his birthplace of Corfu and we give warm thanks to the President of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos, who responded immediately and enthusiastically to our request that the events be placed under his auspices and who will honour us with his presence.”
