07 Oct 2017 / 10:02

CORFU. The first international conference focusing exclusively on Corfu tourism will be held on the 17th, 18th and 19th of November and will be made up of eight modules.

The Organizing Committee met on Thursday evening to plan the next steps. The central focus of the upcoming conference derives from the experience gained from this year’s and previous years’ tourist seasons. This includes the quantity and quality of tourism, the dispersal of income and resources, the phenomenon of ‘overtourism’ and the reactions of local residents in the iconic Mediterranean resorts.

The remaining modules will cover the following issues. Land use, carrying capacity and tourist zones. Employment and vocational training. The sustainability of small businesses, which make up the majority of businesses in Corfu. Successful European examples of Tourist Boards. Culture and Tourism. Religious Tourism. Tourism and local products. The digital and web-based image of the destination along with new technological developments and applications.

The Organizing Committee adopted the principle that the conference should be based on the new technological reality and scientific innovation rather than just carrying on with the usual outdated means.

The Chamber of Commerce has put its new digital platform at the disposal of the conference his and this include a permanent forum to facilitate its virtual progress. A specialised group of journalists has also agreed to give their support to the content of the forum so that the information can be accessible to all Corfu enterprises.

The Municipality has initiated discussions with local authorities, the Chambers and other local bodies to work together on the funding of the conference.

The meeting of the Organizing Committee was attended by the Mayor of Corfu, Representatives from the Ionian University, Members of the Ionian Region, Members of the Albanian Party, Representatives of the 3 Chambers - Commerce, Finance and Technical, the Hellenic Tourist Organization, the Association of Hotels, the Trade Association, the SETE Bureau and  the Scientific Tourism Association.
